| The Propagator's Handbook : Fifty
Foolproof Recipes-Hundreds of Plants for
Your Garden by Peter Thompson, Josie Owen
(Illustrator) |
| Paperback Reprint edition (March
1996) |
| Thompson
teaches plant propagation techniques--from
sowing seeds to dividing, layering, and
rooting cuttings. A dedicated botanist,
he shares years of experience in the 50
"recipes" he presents, containing advice
for propagating perennial plants, tender
annuals, shrubs, and trees. One recipe,
for instance, details the layering method
for a rhododendron. Step-by-step instructions
are followed by an outline of common problems
and remedies. Also included is a list
of over 40 plants that can be handled
in the same way. In this way, each separate
recipe for propagating a specific plant
will pertain to many other plants as well.
Thompson's useful, clearly illustrated
reference manual should help avid gardeners
lower the cost of purchasing plants by
increasing propagation. |

| Maples of the World by P.C. De
Jong, H.J. Oterdoom, D. M. Van Gelderen,
J. R. P. Van Hoey Smith (Contributor),
Theodore R. Dudley (Editor) |
| Hardcover - 512 pages (May 1994) |
| There have been very few--if any--books
devoted to maples, the genus acer. This
truly comprehensive one is the result
of 19 years of work by the scholar-authors.
The largest section is a proposed revision
of the genus, combined with a detailed
description of hybrids and cultivars.
Other chapters cover such subjects as
the history of maple names, maple structure,
native habitats and distribution, pests
and diseases, propagation, paleobotany
and evolution, and reproduction and taxonomy.
The book will be of interest to botanists
because of its taxonomic and nomenclatural
data and its thorough (69-page) bibliography.
There are 207 color photographs of significant
species and cultivars, as well as 5 black-and-white
photos and numerous line drawings. |

| Conifers : The Illustrated Encyclopedia
(Two Volume Set) by D. M. Van Gelderen,
J. R. P. Van Hoey Smith, Royal Boskoop
horticult, D. M. Van Gelderen, J. R. Smith
(Photographer) |
| Hardcover - 706 pages Updated edition
(October 1996) |
The most complete photographic
guide to conifers. Compiled by two of
the world's authorities on the subject
and illustrated throughout in full color,
this book is the most complete collection
of photographs of conifers ever assembled.
The authors' acclaimed earlier book, Conifers,
forms the nucleus of Conifers: The Illustrated
Encyclopedia, but the greatly expanded
coverage of cultivars and additional photos
make the present work more than twice
the size.
The authors have added 10 genera, bringing the total covered to 65. Included for each genus are notes on distribution, discussion of botanical characteristics and classification, and lists of species of particular merit. New in this two-volume set are a common name index, an index of synonyms, a suggested reading list, and a brief essay on photographing conifers. The photographs display fine details of bark, cones, and needles as well as general habit.

| Japanese Maples : Momiji and Kaede
by J. D. Vertrees, J. D. Vertees, Hideo
Suzuki (Designer) |
| Hardcover - 189 pages 2nd edition
(December 1989) |
| A complete guide to the graceful
Japanese maples. This magnificent book
was one of the first Timber Press published,
and it has remained popular because of
its authoritative treatment of its subject.
The character, history, taxonomy, nomenclature,
culture, and propagation of these exquisite
trees are thoroughly discussed, followed
by a complete listing of cultivars with
color photos on every page. Thoroughly
updated in 1987, it now includes information
on significant new cultivars, nomenclatural
changes, and landscape uses. Equally appropriate
for the amateur gardener and the serious
dendrologist, this volume remains the
definitive volume on Acer palmatum and
A. japonicum. |

| The Ortho Problem Solver by Michael
D. Smith (Editor) |
| Hardcover - 1140 pages 5th edition
(October 1999) |
| Much more comprehensive than the
book Ortho offers for the "home gardener", incorporating
many more plants and their problems. I recommend
this for the true avid gardener or one that
has invested a lot of money into their landscaping.
It includes most problems and solutions that
you can encounter in your yard. Though this
book is normally available for reference at
many landscaping/garden stores that sell Ortho
products, those visits to look at it can become
very time consuming. A quick look-up in the
book and treatment is complete (if I have the
correct chemicals) before I'd even have a chance
to get by a store. I have recouped the cost
of the book just in the time I've saved. |
