Remove the rubber
band from the graft by pulling the rubber bands free end (1A)
or by cutting the rubber band against the understock (1B).
Never cut against the scion's side.
To release the pot from the potting mix while avoiding
root damage, grasp the pot side between the left thumb and
ring finger. Press the top surface of the potting mix with
your middle and fore fingers and they straddle the graft
union.
Strike the pot's bottom
sharply against a flat surface with a downward stroke
Maintaining the same
grasp, turn the pot upside-down and strike only the pot's
lip against the edge of a firm surface (3).
Lift the loosened
pot to expose the root system and potting mix.
Transplant the root system's potting mix intact, as a depth,
which allows the entire graft union to be covered with 1/2"
to 1" of new soil (4).
Leave grafts planted in an appropriate bed or container
through its next growing season and possible up to three
years. Shade plants for the first summer removing shade
in the fall.
Recommended planting is approximately 6" spacing in a bed
or 1-gallon containers.
